Moms, Daughters, and Golf

Chrissy and Anne showed up to learn golf together this season, mother and daughter. Chrissy signed up for our beginner program starting from scratch, and Anne signed up right next to her, getting reintroduced to a game she had played before but had not played in quite some time. They came in at two different starting points and skill levels, but we were able to accommodate both of them and let them learn alongside each other, which is really one of the things we wanted when we built Ladies on the Links.

Beginner does not always mean you have never picked up a golf club. We have women who are completely brand new, women who played years ago and want to come back to it, and women who can hit a golf ball but still do not feel comfortable actually getting out on a course. Everyone comes in with different goals and different levels of confidence, and we wanted to create a place where you did not feel like you had to catch up to anyone or be at a certain level before you belonged. Chrissy and Anne are a perfect example of that. They could come together, take lessons together and still each work on what they needed at their own pace.

Watching them this season also made me think about last year when I had the chance to golf with my daughter Mia and some of her childhood friends. We all had different skill levels and it really did not matter at all. We were outside on a beautiful summer day playing nine holes, laughing, spending time together and doing something that we probably would not have otherwise made the time to do.

And honestly, the more I think about it, this is not always just about golf. Everyone shows up for a different reason. Some women really want to learn the game, some want the networking, some are looking to meet new people, some want a reason to get outside for a couple of hours and do something for themselves. Sometimes golf is simply the thing that gets us to put everything else aside for a little while.

That is what I love about watching Chrissy and Anne do this together. Life gets busy, especially as our kids get older and everyone has their own schedules, work, families and everything else that comes with adulting. It is not always easy to find the time to really connect with the people who mean the most to us, and sometimes you need a reason to put that time on the calendar. For them, golf became one of those reasons.

There is also something really cool about being a mom and daughter and learning something together as adults. Most of us are long past the years where Mom is teaching us everything, and now you get to show up somewhere where neither person really has to be the expert. You are just out there figuring it out together, probably laughing at some bad shots along the way, and getting a couple of hours together that might not have happened otherwise.

That is a big part of what I hope Ladies on the Links continues to become. Of course I want women to learn golf and get better at the game, but I also want this to be a place where women connect, build relationships, spend time with people they care about and maybe meet people they would never have met otherwise.
